The Feast of St. Augustine and St. Monica:
A Joyful Celebration of Faith, Fellowship, and Community

Solemn Novena Mass, Reception and Festivities

The spirit of joy and community filled St. Augustine Church as parishioners gathered to celebrate the joint Feast of St. Augustine and his beloved mother, St. Monica. Festive “banderitas” adorned the church entrance and courtyard. Thanks to the Praise and Glorify Choir for setting the stage for days of prayer, fellowship, music, and celebration. The festivities began with a novena from August 19–27, organized by the Para liturgy Committee. The novena culminated in a series of Novena Masses celebrated by SAC priests and seven visiting priests from neighboring parishes, bringing the parish community together in prayer and devotion. The highlight of the celebration was the fiesta on August 22, marked by a Solemn Mass presided over by Fr. Ray Reyes, with Deacon Nestor Fernandez and Deacon Virgil Capetti assisting. Fr. Ifeanyi and Fr. Ed Dura concelebrated the Mass. The Praise and Glorify Choir provided the music for the liturgy. The Knights of Columbus participated in the celebration and added vibrancy to the festivities.

In his homily, Fr. Ray reflected on the lives of Mary and St. Monica, emphasizing their profound openness to God’s will and their unwavering faith. He reminded the congregation of St. Monica’s extraordinary perseverance in prayer and her steadfast trust in God as she prayed for the conversion of her son, Augustine. St. Augustine’s journey to faith, Fr. Ray reminded us, was deeply influenced by the prayers and faithful witness of his mother. Her story offers hope to all of us who pray for loved ones who may have drifted away from the Church or abandoned their faith. Persistent prayer can make a difference, and we should never lose hope. Above all, we are reminded that we are dependent on God’s infinite mercy and grace.   

Following the Mass, parishioners participated in a Eucharistic procession of the Blessed Sacrament, accompanied by the images of St. Augustine and St. Monica. The solemn procession was a beautiful expression of faith and devotion and brought the community together in prayer. 
   

After the Mass and procession, the parish community gathered for a sumptuous lunch reception in the parish hall. What followed was an afternoon filled with music, laughter, and fellowship. The Saint Augustine Children’s Choir and the Praise and Glorify Choir provided lively and memorable entertainment. Their performances of beloved Tagalog songs made popular by Filipino folk singers of the ’70s brought a special touch of Filipino culture and nostalgia to the celebration. Fr. Ray also sang “Handog,” a beautiful Tagalog song whose title means “offering” in English. The song invites us to reflect on what we leave behind when our time in this world comes to an end—that while we may no longer be here, our legacy, our love, and the lives we have touched continue to live on. The courtyard soon came alive with energy as parishioners and guests were inspired to dance and enjoy the music.        It was a wonderful reminder that faith celebrations are also opportunities to strengthen friendships, build community, and simply share the joy of being together. The celebration also showcased the many ministries that make up the vibrant life of the SAC parish community. 
   

The Legion of Mary, SAYG, SvdP, SAC Faith Formation/CCD, HM, EM, Readers, Franciscan Jubilee Committee, P&G Choir, P&G/Jubilee Golf, and SAC Parish Office participated by hosting booths and displaying information about their ministries and activities. Their presence added to the festive atmosphere while also helping raise funds for the renovation of the parish hall. Through their generous participation, the ministries demonstrated once again how much can be accomplished when the parish community comes together in faith and service. 
   

The festivities came to a close on August 28, with a Mass presided over by Fr. Eugene Tungol. Fr. Ray Reyes, Fr. Ed Dura, Fr. Ifeanyi, and Fr. Francis Garbo concelebrated. A simple reception followed the Mass, providing one final opportunity for parishioners to gather in fellowship. 
   

The celebration of St. Augustine and St. Monica was much more than a fiesta. It was a celebration of faith, family, perseverance, and hope. Through the example of St. Monica, we are reminded of the power of a mother’s prayers and the importance of never giving up on those we love. Through St. Augustine, we are reminded that God’s grace can touch a heart even after a long and difficult journey.
