Within the valuable group of educators is a frequently overlooked and underappreciated sector: Special Education (SpEd) teachers, whose dedication and impact often go unrecognized.
One such educator is Audrey Ann B. Bayogos, a credentialed Faith Formation SpEd catechist at St. Augustine, whose incredible work has been increasingly acknowledged by distinguished organizations.
Alongside her work as a Special Day Class teacher in the Jefferson School District—having taught at John F. Kennedy Elementary School and now at Westlake Elementary School in Daly City, California—Audrey Ann also volunteers as a catechist every Saturday, a role she has faithfully maintained since 2020. With patience and compassion, she prepares students with special needs to receive the Sacraments of Reconciliation and First Holy Communion.
Her experience spans a diverse group of learners, including students in grades 3 through 5 with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). She has supported children with Autism (ASD), Down Syndrome (DS), Intellectual Disabilities (ID), Speech and Language Disorders (SLD), and Global Developmental Delays (GDD). She holds a Master of Arts in Special Education from institutions in the Philippines, as well as a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and additional credentials from universities in the United States.
With over 30 years of experience, Audrey Ann has devoted her career to educating young children, working as a SpEd therapist and teacher, Montessori early childhood educator, and consultant and case manager for children with special needs.
While the profession is deeply rewarding, research shows that Special Education teachers experience higher levels of burnout than many other professionals, largely due to the complex and diverse needs of their students. Despite these challenges, Audrey Ann’s dedication remains steadfast.
In recognition of her exceptional service, she received the 2023 Outstanding Global Special Teacher Award from an international organization and Aloysian Publication in the Philippines. She was also honored with the 2024 Dakilang Filipino Award as the Best Outstanding Special Education Specialist, recognizing her impactful work with students requiring extensive support.
This year, she earned the Outstanding Filipino Educators Recognition (Grand Architect of Inclusive Pedagogy Award) from the International Association of Multicultural and Filipino American Educators, Incorporated. She was also selected as a recipient of the Filipino International Educators Excellence Award 2026, presented in collaboration with the Philippine Consulate General in San Francisco, and recognized by the Philippine Normal University Global Alumni Association (PNUGAA) as a distinguished 2026 awardee.
What truly distinguishes Audrey, is her extraordinary ability to combine professional excellence with heartfelt service. She is more than an award-winning educator; A mentor, advocate, humanitarian, and visionary leader whose work continues to inspire countless individuals in the field of education. Her impact is reflected in the lives of the students she has empowered, the teachers she has mentored, the families she has supported, and the communities she has uplifted.
